For my small town girlies that struggle just like me.. ![]()
Now, we’ve always had that issue where you can’t really find something that you might need. And don’t get me started on the STARES people have on you just for looking a little different.
In this post, I will try to teach you ways you can DIY.
Studs
You can make studs out of tea light candles, or even soda cans if you got the proper equipment for it. But the most easiest one is tea light candles, as you can just cut them up and twist them into whatever you like.
Jewelry
Cutting pliers are recommended for this.
You can simply get wires to make fences with. On my town, people often throw them on the ground and I pick them up because we have a use for them at home. You can pretty much do anything with them, even putting a shiny rock you found in the wires.
It has to be soft enough to bend with pliers. I haven’t tried this personally myself yet, but I’ve been looking forward to it.
Acrylic paint
If you got a stationary store, or have something similar to one, you gotta get acrylic paint. It lasts really long on clothes. You can use sharpies too. You gotta let it dry first, then heat it with a clean cloth or parchment paper on top of the design. Using a dry iron on high heat for a minute or less depending on which you’re using
You can also get some paper and a sponge, put some paint on the sponge, and draw on the corners of the paper so it can give a dusty shape.
ALWAYS go to thrifting stores
I know it’s hard to find anything good majority of the time, but you may find something of use. Even if you think it may not look that well, it might work perfectly for patches! If you see any old boots that are broken, you can use them for making jewelry out of the leather.
Or customize old ties, with the acrylic paint, scrap fabric, you can do so much with them. Heck, you can even use old curtains if you’re into that.
Clay
Make your own beads. You can use paint to color OR dead flowers, there is plenty of tutorials online on how to use dead flowers with beads. There is two different kinds of clay, one that air dries, and one that dries in the oven.
Bleach
I’m being serious, use bleach to create sick designs on old shirts or pants. This is if you somehow cannot get acrylic paint or want to try something else. All you need is a few paintbrushes, bleach at home, and a big piece of cardboard so it does not stain the other side. Along with “tailor’s chalk”, you might have some markers at home that are easily washable. Use a small test fabric to see how it would come out with the bleach on top of the marks. It’s possible to use crayons if they’re that transferable to fabric.
Chains
Go to a hardware store and get chains from there. Yes, it’s for bicycles. No, we don’t care. But if you want a more simple one, get cutting pliers and soda can tabs then make your own chain like that. There is tutorials online on how to do it.
If you don’t tend to drink a lot of soda, you can always collect them outside.
Hand/leg warmers, or gloves
CUT UP YOUR SOCKS, if you really want some cool looking gloves, cut them up. Though, I do recommend making a hem at the part where you cut them off so it doesn’t end up ripping. Unless you’re into that.
Watercolor
Not related, but can be of use! Get food dye, or go foraging for flowers that you can then dry and turn into paint.
Keychains
Get shrinking plastic, draw your design on it and then put it onto your oven.
You may need to order it online.
You can also use soda can tabs, pins, and some beads to make them.
Normalize upcycling your clothes
Especially with what you already may have. The key is to be creative with it, you may not even know where it may lead you but it doesn’t matter. What you gotta do, is to DO IT.
A type of thick plastic typically on ita bags
Ita bags are popular now, but if you got a plastic bag with stitches surrounding it, that was to hold a blanket for winter, you can use that to create Ita bags. You can even include the zipper from it. Seam rippers are recommended, but you can still kind of cut it with scissors, it will be harder though.
Now, that’s it for what I got right now. Let me know if you want more of these tips! ![]()
