Mimetophobia - Analog Horror Idea

Last night on Discord a friend told me about the Vita Carnis series, which made me want to take a swing at analog horror myself. So in this topic, I’ll explain the premise, plot, and other details like how the series would be structured. I’ll clear up things at the end. Things that might confuse you are marked with bold text.

:memo: Series Name Meaning

First of all, the name: “Mimetophobia” is the fear of imitation, which may include imitating someone’s appearance, voice, behavior, etc. So given that description you can tell what the main creature here does.

:clapper: Plot

The plot revolves around a species that vanished off Earth millions of years ago when the meteor killed the dinosaurs, leaving only the species’ babies to be frozen during the ice age, in the Antarctic. (I will clear confusion about this up at the end) From 2006 to 2010, when the series takes place, global warming melts the ice that contained this species, which then began to feed off of humans and other animals, growing into large monsters that would reproduce, take out multitudes of humans, and spread to other parts of the globe.

:camera_flash: Premise

The premise of Mimetophobia is the PSAs released by the governments of the world to help citizens protect themselves from the monsters and the footage of encounters with these monsters, and how they behave. There are also things like leaked government testing footage, scientific analyses of the creatures, and police calls and found footage from victims of these creatures. It shows how the creatures adapt to their environment, how they go about hunting, and other characteristics of these creatures, including how they learn and become more intelligent.

:japanese_ogre: Monsters

I’m sure you guys want to know more about this species. So here you go; the main antagonists of the Mimetophobia series are called Copycats by most people (Mimetes Hominivorus scientifically.) They start as small black eggs encased in a clear, blackish slime that protects them from any harm until they hatch into small slimes that absorb small life matter and smaller animals, allowing it to grow bigger. Once it reaches infancy, it begins to take the form of things it eats. The more it eats, there slowly becomes less resemblance to the things it consumes, and the more monstrous, lanky, and bulky they become.

:vhs: Spare Details

Origins

  • It is unknown why the Copycats exist. But most signs lead to being Aliens.
  • They were around when Pangea split, so young copycats that were still in egg state would freeze and become trapped in ice over time, especially during the ice age.
  • Climate Change had melted the ice that copycats were in, and they were carried to land by ocean currents

Government Response

  • Aside from the PSAs, the governments have closed places like national parks to avoid any copycats from catching humans off guard in forested/isolated areas and issued a curfew before the sun sets to prevent people from getting caught by copycats at night.
  • They have attempted to find ways to control Copycat populations before they got too big, such as setting up outposts in areas where slime mounds have been found/multiple Copycats were spotted in.
  • Nuclear tests have been conducted on copycats. Results have shown radiation to be ineffective against them and the blast of a nuclear weapon is only effective if it kills off all tissue, so a direct blast is the only effective way to kill off a copycat.
  • Any towns nearby have had members of the army placed there to prevent any Copycat invasions. Heavy monitoring is issued across these towns.
  • There is no way to contain copycats long-term.

Dangers

  • Copycats have halved multiple populations of different animals, which have started to throw off the plant-animal balance in ecosystems.
  • Copycats go after humans because they are the most bountiful animals on the planet that can supply them with nutrients and other things they need to grow
  • Copycats have shown the ability to learn plan and strategize. They can set up ambushes that can take out even heavily armed soldiers.

Yeah, that’s all I have to share about my idea for now. If you guys are interested I could do more stuff about this and share more things relating to it.

if you’re confused about anything let me know and I’ll clear it up as best I can.

In vita carnis, they have different varients of the same creature.

Could their diet determine their physical ability/appearence?
Like if one ate EXCLUSIVELY humans, would they start to look more human/take on more human traits such as speech or greater problem-solving?

Yes, if they were to eat lots of birds they’d become most bird-like and be able tovfly before they begin maturing

Yes
As they eat humans, they gain the ability to mimic human speech and can figure out how humans act to lure in more victims

They look humanoid while they grow up, until they begin maturing where they take on a more beastly appearance.

If you put them infront of a puzzle that is the way to escape a room, they’ll figure the puzzle out quickly

watch mandela catalogue, kinda this minus the monster’s backstories. good ideas tho

AND I JUST REPHRASE IT BRO :skull:

unwarranted, completely unrelated, and it is literally just a slipper on top of a small plastic baseball bat.

Idk about you guys but i think it was an amazing decision to use global warming as the reason these monsters get released back into the world

What are some things you all want me to elaborate on in the follow up topic?

What are ways that these things interact with nature?
Where did they actually come from?
What do they want to do? (besides like, the whole survival thing)

  1. By eating literally everything.

Did these things have Natural predators of some kind? Like, did some Dinosaurs or packhunting mammals like Wolves, Dire or otherwise; or a coalition of Smilos or something; manage to figure out how to hunt down Copycats? Because, there’s got to be at least something out there that’s must’ve found a way to take 'em.

Heck, I could even see large Pterosaurs like the Quetz employing it’s sharp beak to stab at it safely from the air, or even smaller ones making passing bites at them to whittle them down.

Fun Fact:

“Mimetes Hominivorus” is “Man-Eating Mime” in English
