The reason that darker-colored jeans are more rigid and tough, compared to the lighter-colored ones further down the aisle in the store, is because of what they denim in the jeans goes through to get said lighter color.
Denim is traditionally dyed with indigo, giving it that dark blue color we all know and love.
However these days, most manufacturers use cotton instead of denim in jeans.
Indigo dye acts differently to cotton compared to other dyes, where the dye doesn’t seep into the cotton, and rather stays on the surface.
So for cotton jeans, as they wear down, they slowly get lighter in color.
However, they offer these lighter colors in store along with the original darker version.
How they get the jeans to be the lighter color is they use wash houses.
They put fully dyed and sewn jeans into the wash houses with pumice stones and bleach, which wears out the dye, and also the jeans themselves.
So when you buy lighter colored jeans, you’re also technically buying used jeans as well.
