Welcome back to the show! This episode originally aired on September 25, in 2023. You may know that as the day when Carl Henson took CCC down. The episode was published when the site went down, and the post didn’t save. So im redoing it! Anyway, lets not drag on too much and talk about what today’s phobia is.

History

---

Thalassaphobia is known as the fear of the ocean, but that’s part of it. It is actually the fear of deep bodies of water in general. Some fears similar to Thalassaphobia include Aquaphobia, the general fear of water, Submechanophobia, the fear of man-made object in water, and Megalohydrothalassophobia. The combination of Thalassaphobia and Megalophobia

The name “Thalassaphobia” was coined around the 1890’s, and the causes for it are various and flexible. The stories and news arcticles of sharks, stingrays, eels, and other sea life attacking people is one of the causes. Jewish and Christian beliefs potray the sea as a place of distaster and punishment, depicted in stories like Noah’s Arc. William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” featured a shipwreck as the main force behind its narrative, and gave the sea an “evil” and “otherworldly” feel.
